FLICK THE SWITCH

Design and Technologies

Welcome to the world of electrical energy!  It’s all around us, and we use electrical energy as part of our everyday lives.

So how does it all work?  Work through the activities and videos in the yellow boxes to see how it all works.

Engage

1.  In the engage stage of the Web Quest, watch the movie Electrical circuits

2.  Answer the questions on Worksheet 1

When finished place into your Science workbooks for your teacher to review.

Explore

3.  In collaborative groups explore how a circuit works, and ways to make simple circuits.  Some useful websites to explore are as follows:

Explain

4.  Using the information you have collected previously, work in pairs or small groups and select appropriate materials, components, tools, equipment and techniques and apply safe procedures to explore a circuit in a simple torch.

As part of the explain stage of the inquiry, make notes in your Science workbooks as you disassemble the torch to help you to re assemble the torch at the end of your hands on inquiry.

Complete worksheet 2 and put into your Science workbooks for review from your teacher.

Elaborate

5.  From the information gathered during your inquiry make a simple circuit that uses electrical energy to control light, sound or movement from items located on the Science trolley.

This is part of the elaboration phase of the inquiry.

As you make your circuit, use the IPad to record the process to use in the explanation phase of the inquiry.

Evaluate

6.  Using data and visual images collected during the explore phase of the inquiry, you are to write a short report on how electrical energy can control light, sound or movement in an everyday object.

Save your report to your USB and give to your teacher for review and evaluation.

Make sure you have all your completed worksheets in your Science workbook ready for your teacher.
